Cheesecake on the menu

Residents at Riversway Nursing Home spent time making a delicious white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake recently.

Well done to Monica, Joyce, Brenda and Beryl for contributing, and to Brenda’s niece who read out the instructions for us, and Beryl’s daughter who gave us tips!

Some excellent teamwork was on display – well done to everyone, the cheesecake was lovely.

Good luck to Natalia

Mum-to-be Natalia, a member of the team at Riversway Nursing Home, was given a lovely send-off recently as she starts her maternity leave.

The mini baby shower, and combined leaving party, was a really special occasion and we can’t wait to see her again soon. Many of the residents love speaking to Natalia about her baby and receiving updates from her.

The party was also a chance to congratulate our colleague, Lisa, on taking over the learning and development post at Riversway.

Riversway accepted onto Teaching Care Homes programme

Bristol’s Riversway Nursing Home has been accepted onto the industry-leading Teaching Care Homes programme.

Led by Care England, the Teaching Care Homes programme aims to develop a network of homes working to raise the profile of long-term social care as ‘an exciting, rewarding and forward-thinking career choice’ while sharing knowledge and best practice.

Homes accepted onto the programme work to: demonstrate a commitment to person-centred care; become a centre for learning, practice development and research; and create strong working relationships with academic and education providers and become a resource for other care homes.

Mike Lakins, head of learning and development at Springhill Care Group, said: “Teaching Care Homes is a fantastic initiative. As an innovative market leader in the care sector already, this is an exciting opportunity to collaborate further with our partners Dementia UK and the Clinical Commissioning Group.

“Working alongside partners like this on such a prestigious programme will not only strengthen our position but will give our workforce the very best learning opportunities available.”

The programme was started in 2016 with a pilot involving five homes funded by the Department of Health and is now supported by the Burdette Trust for Nursing. Last year a further five homes were selected to participate.

Now, in partnership with the Foundation of Nursing Studies (FoNS) a third round of homes have been welcomed onto the programme, including Riversway Nursing Home in Bristol.

Riversway, part of the Springhill Care Group, is a purpose-built home offering care for people with a wide range of physical needs, including younger people. It also offers a dedicated 17-bedroom suite with trained support staff to care for residents with dementia.

The focus for homes involved in the 2019/20 programme will be collaborating with partners such as acute services, universities and GP practices. Participants will benefit from a support and development programme including workshops, mentorship and on-site support.

Flowers on display

A group of Riversway residents made some beautiful flower arrangements recently.

Lucy, in particular, loves flowers so she really enjoyed smelling them and looking at all the different colours.

Everyone enjoyed crafting the displays of yellow roses and purple and pink tulips, and the activity got us in the mood for springtime and brought a ray of sunshine into the home.

Forget me not cafe

It was wonderful to bring everyone together for our latest monthly  ‘forget me not café’ here at Riversway Care Home.

Hot drinks were served to wash down a selection of scrumptious cakes, including lemon drizzle cake, Victoria sandwich, coffee cake and carrot cake.

We all enjoyed having a chat with each other whilst deciding which cake to sample next, everyone agreed that they'd had a very nice morning!
