Jo’s work is poetry in motion

Jo Williams, Assistant Nurse Practitioner at Riversway Nursing Home was recently inspired to put pen to paper whist spending quality, one-to-one time with one of our residents.

Jo asked if we would share her poems with you, so here’s a little background......

Whilst recently spending one-to-one time with Brian, Jo came across a reading book with a page neatly bookmarked in a drawer, Jo assumed that Brian must have previously liked to read, so she began to read the book out loud to him.  After a while Jo started to sing, to see if the tunes would help stimulate his mind more, as everyone enjoys listening to music don’t they?

This proved successful, so Jo then bought in some CDs from home.  Loui Armstrong, Glenn Miller and Buddy Holly tunes soon began to fill Brian’s room and he began to shake his leg as he started to recognise the tunes, this was so heart warning to see.  Jo had also got some hand muffs for him to touch and feel and a ball with a stimulation effect, which he started to throw around his room whilst listening to the music.

Whilst watching the positive changes in Brian's mood, Jo was inspired to write a few words down and she compiled the two poems below.

We hope you like them.

Music is the way to my memory

Listen to the music in the background, brings back memories to me that were sound.

Dancing too, is what I loved to do, especially when I met my love – you.

You inspired me throughout our time, and the good things is – it’s remained in my mind.

I want to thank you for all you do, and to remind you that I really love you.

So as my memory is now poor, put on the music and let’s hear more!

Remember Me

Tell me what do you see when you’re looking at me?

Don’t be sad or have pity on me, I am still me behind this face, all I want is to be treated with dignity and grace.

It’s only my memory that is playing me up, I am still me just unfortunate.

Tell me my day will be ok, and help me throughout to find my way.

This is the path chosen for me, just remember I am still me.

20 years of care for Riversway Nursing Home

Residents, relatives and staff at a Bristol nursing home are all coming together for a special celebration event to mark 20 years of care.

A series of special activities will take place on July 27 at Riversway Nursing Home, Crews Hole Road, including live music, stalls, a buffet and cream tea.

Senior staff members from Springhill Care Group will attend the milestone event, including Ken Nolan, founder and chairman, and Donna Briggs, managing director.

The fun will start at 10am with entertainment including face-painting, a coconut shy and stocks featuring staff and management.

The day will continue with a lunchtime barbeque followed by entertainment and a singalong, with a speech from Ken Nolan in the afternoon. Further live music and cream tea will follow, with a buffet in the evening and more entertainment bringing the day to a close.

Jan Wilkins, General Manager at Riversway, said: “Twenty years in business is a real milestone and it’s great that we are able to celebrate in this way – with everyone important to the home all present.

“We can’t wait to spend time celebrating the anniversary with all our residents, families, friends and staff, and we’ve plenty planned to make sure everyone has a great time.”

A fitting tribute to Sarah

It’s been one year since Sarah Huntley, a popular member of staff here at Riversway, sadly passed away.

Sarah was a key part of the staff team, working as an administrator during her time with us from June 2009 to early April last year.

Respected by all who met her, the staff at Riversway felt it would be a fitting tribute to remember Sarah with a plaque and rose in our lovely garden.

The tribute was paid for by staff members keen to mark her passing, and who can now remember her as they spend time in the outdoor space she loved.

Cupcakes at Riversway

Riversway Nursing Home in Bristol hosted its own charity Cupcake Day recently to raise awareness of dementia.

The national event, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, sees people up and down the country baking, buying and eating cupcakes to help raise funds for research into dementia.

At Riversway, a lot of fun was had with games, prizes and cupcake decorating taking place. Plenty of cakes were eaten and shared by everyone around the home, and for those who couldn’t leave their rooms – we took the celebrations to them!

Visitors and family members stopped by to join in the fun, and we look forward to hitting our charity target.

Fundraising will be open until July 16th. Anybody looking to help with Riversway’s fundraising efforts can visit:

Catching up with the housework

Recently a number of our residents asked if they could help out with housework around Riversway, why not we said!

Hoovering, washing up after breakfast and folding laundry were on the agenda, with plenty of time spent matching lonely socks!

Eventually the washed and folded clothes were taken to the laundry room where our group met staff member Samina.

We heard lots of comments from residents expressing amazement at what modern washing machines can do and the amount of clothes that can fit.

Everyone had a lovely time and it was good to see our resident’s happily chatting whilst folding laundry and keeping themselves busy with the housework.  Afterwards we all had a nice cup of tea which rounded off the morning perfectly!
